Why are the ducks laying eggs out in the open in single digit weather?

I have Muscovy ducks that will lay their eggs outside of the coop and then they freeze and split..... Are they just trying to get me to feed them frozen eggs???

Muscovy's are suppose to be good brooders but mine seem to care less about sitting on their eggs....

My Turkeys are laying eggs and will sit on them for a while then leave them for a day.... not sure what's up with that.... They'll never hatch this way....

I have never had a duck lay in a nest box, and I've only has two that would make a nest and lay in it. That's just the way ducks are, or at least, that's the way mine are. You just need to collect them before they freeze.

Most ducks just lay where ever the notion hits them. Ive had ducks lay everywhere including in the pond.

My runner ducks lay very well during most seasons, winter they take a short breaks on and off.

I know that they will often times lay wherever the "mood" strikes... playing in the water, waddling across the run etc...

But when they get the mood to be broody they lay in the same spot each and every time wherever they have chosen to be the nesting site. My guess is your ducks will keep to one spot when they go broody.

Same with the turkeys , until the actual "broodiness" sets in they won't be reliable sitting. My experience with turkeys is it will be warmer weather before they have a mind to set on a nest to hatch.

Just my opinion.

Okay, thanks for the info... guess I'll continue to collect eggs and sell them.... no point in leaving them to freeze if they lay during the night...
