Why are these so expensive?

somebody is trying to sell "RARE" chicks up in Jackson for $10 and up. no way he's gonna get it. http://hattiesburg.craigslist.org/grd/2723361692.html Around here, everybody's going for the Lavender Orpingtons. I'd like to get a hen.. That's it.. I'm not big on LF. at all. maybe LF Cochins or something... well, the one exception... I would lOVEEE to have Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. Been wanting some for years.. literally.. I've been hoping for them for 7 years. still haven't gotten any.

I think its really everything new. When a vcr came out I gave 600.00 for one. Look at all the new electronics when they first come out. You can wait a year and get it for half. I also agree with the poster about coronation sussex. Just this spring I saw a dozen eggs bring over 100.00. I'll have to admit, I had to have some. They are great looking chickens. I would have to say the buff and gold laced brahma's really got me when I first saw a picture of them a year ago. I had to have them to, but wouldn't pay 1,800.00 I saw them bring in one auction. I think the lavender orps have sold more this spring than any other colour I can remember. My true love is the heritage breeds of rir, barred rocks and nh. I wish those that are thinking about a breed would check out the heritage breeds, they really need some help.

Just my opinion, but I've quite some doubt that someone out there has Plymouth Rocks that match the standard and are truly Blue Laced Red. But, hey, anything's possible. . . . I'd just expect to see some anything Laced culls or sells by now.

I think everybody has their own favorite breed, but there is not a chicken out there that I would pay 100.00 + dollars for! I have trouble rationalizing spending 25.00 on a single bird I really have to think long and hard before I can bring myself to fork out that money nowadays.

It's the same as any hobby. Golf, tennis, skydiving, racing, pottery, any hobby. You spend money on equipment and supplies (ie birds) for the enjoyment, not to make "money" off of them. You can't buy peace of mind and that's what a hobby is for.

Since I don't have chickens, I have to agree with that. But I would sure spend more than $100 for a goose. Heck, I tried to pay $500 for a fancy goldfish, but someone else beat me to it while I was making up my mind. When top quality animals come available you have to jump on it fast.

The thing is, if it is just the right bird with just the right pedigree and it has virtues that you would like to have in your flock, that $100 bird should be able to produce an awful lot of babies for you and increase the overall quality of your entire flock. When you are talking about chickens, one bird can have an enormous influence on your flock in just a year's time.

Good breeding stock costs real money. That's all there is to it.

I can see your point, but for me and this is Just me, My chickens are for eggs and pets and the occational table bird, (If raising chickens was my sole sorce of income, or my bussiness I might be persuaded to spend my money that way.) but it isn't, and while I love a beautiful bird to me its just not worth the money, I love to have a beautiful flock in the yard to watch for entertainment and hatchery or birds from a breeder that is reasonably priced serves that purpose well.

Well, I for one think that there are some chickens that are priceless.

Take Jennie for example, she is a gorgeous Splash Wheaten Ameraucana, she lays very blue eggs and she is an awesome mother.

Can't wait till she starts laying again so I can put some of her eggs in the bator... I want more, just like her!
