I have like ten laying right now ( orpingtons) mostly they lay in the hen boxes daily
However like four times recently they lay them on the floor which would be alright but they bury them . Like completely cover them up
Why are they doing that?

if they are not all laying in the nest boxes...why?
are there enough nest boxes?
maybe put a couple golf balls or fake eggs in the boxes to train everyone where to lay.
i agree that the act of scratching around is inadvertently covering the eggs with bedding materials..

Agrees that the pertinent question might be why are they not using the nests?
If you give us info on how many nests and some pics of them, we might be able to help.
Or it could be you have accepted that new layers might not use the nests at first.
Also agree that it's just normal scratching that is inadvertently covering the floor laid eggs.

I just think the new layers lay around the ground occasionally, most of them do use the boxes . I have plenty of boxes and also I have fake eggs in some and there’s always real eggs in them as well that I collect daily
