Backstory:

I purchased a hen from a reputable breeder at a show. She went broody so I gave her some eggs that were fixing to hatch. (They were hers or her sisters anyway!) She had 4. For three weeks everything was fine until one day one died. I have no clue what happened, we just went to feed and it was dead. The next day I found a second one dead. I thought maybe it was mama somehow so I brought the other two inside and put them in the brooder with 6 chicks I had purchased from TSC and 4 more I had hatched recently. I noticed that the older chicks were sneezing a bit almost immediately, so I pulled them back out and separated them. (I haven't heard it since, so it might have been due to a change in environment.) Anyway, the about 3 days after that one of my TSC chicks started to look droopy. It died later that day. The next day another one died. About 3 days after that (today), one of my baby chicks I hatched died. And tonight I find another one I hatched looking "droopy" like the others did before they died.

The ONLY symptoms I can see is that they don't seem to run and kick and play as much as the others, then they lay down, then they lay on their sides with a leg and a wing sticking out, then they are gone. It happens pretty fast from start to finish. Poop seems normal, I gave vitamins/electrolytes after the TSC chicks died and started using the yellow antibiotic powder today in thier water after finding the other one dead. I figure it can't hurt.....

I am still learning about chickens, but kinda jumped in with both feet. Obviously, I shouldn't have put the babies from the mama in with the others. (They are absolutely fine for now, no more died after I took them away from mama.) But what on Earth could be going on? I've had 5 die within 2 weeks! And it seems pretty random too. The others (TSC chicks and my chicks) are still fit as fiddles (knock on wood!)

I'm just really starting to get worried and upset. I don't want to lose any more! Especially this newest one. It's currently curled up in my hair and peeping softly. Just pooed on my shirt. LOL

Thanks for the link! If it's an infection, there's really no way I can stop it.....just hope for the strong ones to make it through?

I woke up to another dead chick this morning, it was the one I was cuddling with last night. And it looks like two more are fading. At this point, I might just give up incubating all together. I've given them vitamins, antibiotics, they are on medicated feed, and I'm bleaching out a different brooder to move them to.....maybe that has something to do with it. Until now, I haven't lost a single chick, and I raised 35 of them. Five of those I hatched and all made it to adulthood. I just know it was something the two from the mama brought in. I know this is all my fault.

Can I give the Vetrx to the chicks? I'm desperate to stop this! I've lost 6 so far and it doesn't look like it's stopping any time soon.

I am so sorry thuis is happening to you and your chicks, at this point I believe I'd try just about anything, you said it had something to do with the hen that was sitting on them, does she have symptoms of some kind of illness?

No one else is showing any kinds of illness, the hen in question is back in the pen with the other big girls and their roo. These chicks are being brooded in my bathroom, it is large and open, plenty of airflow. I changed the brooder box to something different. Bleached it out WELL before I used it. New shavings down and will change them again tomorrow. The feed is what I'm feeding everyone else (I have 3 "teenagers" growing out in the kitchen brooder on the same stuff.) I can try a different bag, or a different brand even!

I just feel so guilty. I just know it was due to my lack of bio-security. I will never make this mistake again, I feel so bad that these babies have to suffer.

Thanks for the well wishes...

*sniff* I"m sick with a cold right now myself AND I'm having pretty serious family issues right now, so this is hitting me extra hard.
