Why are they eating feathers?

My chickens eat some of the fluffy feathers that fall off of them. I was wondering if anybody knew why chickens eat some of their fluffy feathers?

Feathers have a lot of protein in them so your birds may need extra protein. What percent of protein is in the feed you are giving them?

Well, their still chicks their only about 13 weeks old [ we haven't had chicks in a while]. They don't eat their feathers that much anymore they just did that quite a bit when they where pretty young, just wanted to know why.
