Why Are We Black?

Putting in a record of the bottoms of their feet:

At almost 20 weeks no patterning has shown up and the light-swallowing matte black of their juvenile feathers has turned into the most glorious green iridescence.

Despite the fact that this cross should not have produced sex-links, not only are all 4 of mine female (now POL pullets), but all the black chicks from the entire hatch are female (the woman who got the other black chicks can't have roosters and would have passed any boys to me).

I'll try to get good photos this afternoon just for the record.
