Why aren't we supposed to use cedar shavings for litter?

Aspen is from the popular family and is a soft wood they make great shavings and are less flamable than others!

As with many things, there are technical definitions. Sometimes they don't make a lot of sense.

"Softwood - A coniferous tree or its wood." - This is the technical definition. Many hardwoods, such as the aspen, are softer than some of the softwoods, such as some members of the pine family.

Aspen, a member of the Populus family along with cottonwoods and poplars, is deciduous, not coniferous, thus is technically a hardwood. Shavings from the Aspen's soft wood is used a lot for animal bedding. I don't know how much truth in advertising there is in labelling "softwood" shavings bags. If they follow the technical definition Akane is correct but it would not shock me to find out that somebody uses "soft wood" as opposed to "softwood", in which case Jeremy is correct since he spelled it that way. A minor technical difference, such as the technical difference in "fruit, trees" and "fruit trees" that cost our government millions in import duties many decades ago.
