Why Arn't Duck Eggs Popular?

I love duck eggs and would eat them over chicken eggs any time. Why are they not found in stores? I don't even see anyone local in my rural community selling them?

Does the chicken industry have too big a lobby or something?

There must be some sort of regional or demographic variation going on. Check out iamcuriositycat's post about not being able to provide enough eating or hatching eggs in her area.

A local farmer (dairy) told me last year I ought not get ducks but chickens, because no one wants duck eggs.

A local retailer told me last week that he would sell my duck eggs at his store, and a neighbor has asked if she can have some because she loves duck eggs.

A friend has told me that if I end up with a drake and therefore fertile eggs, that she wants some to hatch. My runners are only seven weeks old!

Years ago I moved to eastern Ohio. Farm country. I asked where the local farmers' markets were. I got blank stares. There were no farmers' markets. There were farms all over the place, but they sold to wholesale distributors (beef, dairy, pork, mostly), no one to speak of grew produce, no apples, no pears, no cabbage . . . It was sad.

Speaking only for myself there's an Ick factor with duck eggs that I just can't get past. Of course my wife says I only think I don't eat duck eggs. Wonder what she means?

I personally can't wait to try them, but I have had some hesitant looks from people when I say I may have some to sell when my ducks start laying. I plan on giving out some for free for people to try if I don't get any intrest at first. Then if they like them, they can buy them from me. I hope I end up in curiousitycats situation, that would be great, and I could justify getting more ducks, LOL, jk.

The first time I tried duck eggs I was very hesitant. I wanted scrambled eggs and was out of chicken eggs, but I had some duck eggs in the fridge so I thought, "What the hell," and I cracked a few in a bowl and beat 'em up. The yolk was a little thicker, but I added my milk salt & pepper, dumped 'em in the pan and scrambled them. I made my hot tea and my toast, put it all on a plate, set down at the table, stuck my fork in, hesitantly brought it up to my mouth and took a bite. And guess what? It tasted like......are you ready for this??.................eggs. A little..... "eggier" maybe... but they tasted like eggs.

And they make my cakes and cookies so rich and yummy. I swear they are THE best eggs for baking.

Our ducks just started laying about 8 weeks ago. The first dozen we gave to a friend who wanted to incubate them. The rest went in the fridge. They have been used in brownies, egg sandwiches, scrambled eggs and they're great. Definitely a thicker yolk and richer. No ick factor here.

my firts duck egg was huge! when i cracked it into the pan the yolk was sooo huge and so orange! i cooked it over-easy and sat down with the egg, a sausage, biscuit,and sausage gravy, and cut into that thing and the yolk was so thick and so DELICIOUS!!! i was amazed how good it was. i prefer duck eggs over plain hens eggs now. I have read on the web that cancer patients seek duck eggs because they say duck eggs are alkaline based and eat cancer up. the natural way!

Perhaps the same reason why rare breeds are still rare. . . Because people want just plain what is on the market and don't look or ask further.

A little while ago I really didn't even know you could eat duck eggs like you could chicken eggs

- But then we had a Rouen lay some eggs, and my were they GOOD.

(this was before I had chickens though, so compared to storebought eggs. . . They were the BEST.

) And of course duck meat. . . Wow. Amazing food.

I absolutely love duck eggs, I cant wait till my 4 hens start to lay... myhusband refuses to eat duck eggs ... but he will on accident...

he also complain about goats milk so I snuck him a glass and he didnt even notice the difference, until I told him it was goats milk ..

then it made him sick ....

what ever ...

so I just teased him about it for ... well I still am ... he wouldnt have known unless I had told him....

duck eggs make egg-cellent french toast ...

I used to have 8-10 sep hens in summer just for egg's.I had buyers that used them for baking.I wonder how many nice looking wedding cakes they made hehe.bakers swear by them
