Why bantams?

Wow, I have recently gotten "into" bantams (my first chickens are all large dual-purpose) and now have 2 Cochins, a Buff brahma, and FOUR Sebrights. I have 3 of the Silver and then discovered the Golden, so now I have one of those.

I want to know WHEN the heck I can tell if they're boys or girls?!?!?! Two Silvers are almost 9 weeks old, one Silver and the Golden are in the brooder, 4 wks old.

I previously thought I would "never" want bantam breeds - "What good are they?" I also thought. Midget chickens.

I wanted a (giant) Cochin really badly, saw a CL ad, responded to it, discovered I'd missed the word "bantam" in that ad, but fell in love with two bantam cochins. Darn, they're cute! So I bought 'em. That broke the barrier. The Silver Sebrights are very pretty, but they're true bantams, you CAN'T get large fowl Sebrights. Darn. Oh, well, already have bantam cochins, maybe it wouldn't be that awful for them to have some buddies their own size. (Not shape, but size!

)

i got my 1st bantys becouse i wanted silkies to sit on my eggs then i seen a special in feb. for banty special idealpoultry.com .99 each so i ordered them got a few cochins polish and self blue oegbs among others those are just my faves

I started out with large fowl, then after 5 years started adding to my flock with bantam cochins. Loved them. My large fowl died off over the years and I have had nothing but bantams since (cochin, silkies, seabrights, and now faverolles) I will probably never go back to standard size again. Just a preference. I find that they are easier to manage, and to be honest, the amount of poop in my coop is less. Even though they are smaller, I still get medium to medium large eggs. My customers that buy eggs off me don't mind at all. They are just happy to have fresh eggs.

Bantams are PERFECT for kids and grandkids. Nice and easy to handle and easier to catch.

And they are absolutely adorable.

Plus, they are a good size to become house-chickens! We have a couple that keep us company every morning, then go back out by their sisters after breakfast.

The roosters are less intemidating to my sister and little cousin..... how could you be affraid of something so small and cute!

I really like my bantams and am in the process of switching to all bantams. When my current flocks of large chickens are gone, they probably won't be replaced. There are lots of things I like about the bantams.

1. they eat less.
2. easier to pick up.
3. the 1.5lb rooster is a lot less scary than my 8 lb rooster. I have kids that love to spend time with the hens. Right now they can't go in the pen with the big roo because he has started challenging me.
4. take up less space.
5. the OEGB eggs I have gotten before are not really small, more in the medium range. I'll be finding out soon if that is typical when this new flock starts laying.
6. they go broody more often- hubby wont let me buy an incubator.
7. they are so darn cute!

I could go on, but i think you get the point LOL!
