Why can't I obtain Sulmet?

The best and easiest on their systems is the Corid. You'd use 10 cc/ml (2 tsp) in a gallon waterer, made fresh daily, for 5-7 days. I've never had to do it twice, but when I used to use Sulmet, it would take several rounds of it (I think my soil probably has the one oocyst that Sulmet isn't effective against).

I used 1 tblsp per 1 gallon of water for 5 days and everybody was cured and went right back to laying.

Thank you all for the great help. I've decided to try the Corid this time, even though it's so much more expensive. Maybe it will be more beneficial, able to rid my birds of cooties Sulmet hasn't been able to conquer. Here in South Florida the chicken yard is like one big petri dish for most of the year, I expect to see bacteria growing large enough to be seen with the naked eye. I will check those online sources to see if they have the pint bottles of Sulmet available, and if they are I'll tell the folks at the local feed stores about them.

I still wonder, why is it so difficult to find these days? I wonder if the labs that used to make it are now working on Swine Flu vaccines instead?

I just checked the Jeffers website & found Sulmet "indefinitely backordered", Cackle still has it listed, but I didn't try to complete an order there. I think if you want to have some Sulmet to use in the future you should order/buy some now. Or switch to Corid.

I found Corid at my local feed store it's $87 a gallon. It has a cow on the jug??? Is that the right kind? If so, I am going to get it just to have on hand in case I ever need it.

I paid 15.95 for 1 pint, so 87.00 for a gallon is a good deal. If you are just using it for a few chickens like i am, that gal. will last like, 10 lifetimes.

No matter how you look at it, it's expensive but, it does the job. That's the main thing.

I paid $20 for a pint of Corid, so a gallon would cost $160 at that rate! If I decide to continue using Corid I'll be looking online for a less expensive source.

Today I looked online for info about the makers of Sulmet, Fort Dodge Animal Health. I cannot find any contact info, but did see where they've merged with Pfizer. Maybe they're just taking time away from production to learn how to pronounce & spell their new company's name. But maybe they're going to discontinue making Sulmet. I would really like to know what their plans are, to let them know how much I used their product in the past, to ask them to continue making it.

So I would recommend getting a bit extra to have on hand, just in case.

And if ANYone knows the full story behind the scarcity of supply, please let us know!

Last time I was at the feed store, I saw a packet of sulfamethazine powder (which is the active ingredient for Sulmet) in the poultry section. I believe it is the same stuff that is selling online for $16 (makes 102 gallons). So IF you want to go that route instead of Corid, you could look for the powder.

As long as it's 9.6% amprolium, it's the one - no matter which farm animal is on the container. For whatever reason, it seems they don't really market it for chickens. But it's the same stuff.
