why can't I sell eggs?

people that have never eating fresh eggs, don't understand what the difference is.

some city folk (and even country folk) are so used to the white eggs they get at the store, that they don't understand that farm fresh eggs are the same (well better imo). there was a post on here about crazy things people have asked chicken owners about the eggs and so forth. I know some have asked me if babies are in the eggs that I have, or if they are dirty. some don't understand that egg color depends on the breed not if they are dirty or clean.

if you explain to them that they are from well cared for chickens that get affection and enjoy a normal domesticated life, unlike mass producing chickens that mostly live in cages and don't even get to see the outdoors and live a fulfilling life. when people start to realize where things come from and how the animals are treated that give them the products they enjoy so much, it at least makes them stop and think of something other than the dollar price. I am one to try and save money every way I can, but these things help me to stop and think about what I am eating.

Find a church food bank and they will give you a donation slip for taxes just like goodwill for the going price of eggs. Win win, you sell your eggs and someone needing help gets healthy eggs! Food banks run by the state or county say they can't take them, But I found two churches waiting for my chicks to lay.

Next time someone says they didn't like them (or whoever didn't like them) ask what exactly they didn't like? Flavor? Cleanliness? Color of shells? Color of yolks? Blood spots?

If it's lame stuff like shell color or rich orange yolks, you could educate and explain why there is a difference from store eggs.
If they just don't like dark yolks or brown shells... well, you can't do much more do for those folks.
If cleanliness is an issue, you can correct that. I know some people don't wash eggs and while I understand that, it's a turn-off for a lot of folks. (I'm not saying your eggs are dirty!)
If flavor is off, is it that the eggs actually have a flavor vs the bland store eggs or are your chickens eating something that's giving the eggs an off flavor? Blood spots happen but they do freak people out. I candle all of my eggs and pull any that have blood spots.

Good luck!

Thanks great ideas. Most of the time people are saying its the taste. I can't eat store eggs it makes me feel ill and that's why I started raising my own. I do wash my eggs so that's not it. The price maybe but I'm not going any lower.

have you shared them with your neighbors who don't have chickens? I've given away eggs and people tell me they don't want me giving them free eggs my problem is I only have 5 chickens 2 are bantam and only 1 large egg producer at the moment 2 dozen doesn't go very far when they are small.

I gave away some free samples to co-workers and neighbors and told them the price if they wanted another next dozen. I've gotten a few customers that way, and the rest have been word of mouth. Your price is very reasonable and it's crazy that people don't like the flavor! You have a bunch of weirdos in your town!

I do think toting the health benefits is a good route to go. Also, I put a little note in my cartons thanking the customers for supporting local food and telling a bit about my hens- just a couple sentences. Good luck!

Maybe you can find a local breakfast/lunch counter type of diner that may be willing to buy off you.

I work with seniors and told them last week that I would sell them eggs. Got 15 orders in the first 2 days. Do you have a senior center around?

Also, I put a label on the carton with an egg recipe our name, phone, and gather date on it. Right now my chickens are so far behind I think I need to get more lol

I have the exact opposite problem. Where I live there are 4 others within a mile of me that sell eggs. The highest prices ones are $2.00 and go down from there. I sell mine for $1.00 no matter what eggs they are--white, brown, green all $1.00. Only advertising I have done is word of mouth and one flyer put up. I avg 20 eggs a day and can barely keep up with demand. So far have not had any negative comments. Try lowering your price. In this time a lot of people are squeezing everything they can.
