why did my chick die??

I have 17 4 week old meat kings, this morning the smallest bird was found breathing hard, neck kept extending. No discharge,poops regluar. I seperated her with food and water. Went to check on her,she was dead does this sound more like respatory or heat issues? Unusually hot day today.

Sorry for the loss of the bird.

It could have been the heat. Meat birds in particular are susceptible to heat. But, watch the others carefully, just in case it was something contagious.

Also, meat chickens tend to have more problems than other birds. Its possible that this bird had an internal problem.

The fact that you were able to identify it as the 'smallest one' implies that it was not thriving, and thus probably just a natural culling by Mother Nature, it happens the mortality rate of baby chicks is actually quite high in the first month or so of life even with the best care...
