Why did my ducklings die?

One of my broody hens hatched out about 11 ducklings last Tuesday. As of this morning all of them have died. I was only able to catch one of them before and it seemed very lethargic. It would lose balance and thrust its head back repeatedly. I only had it for about 45 minutes before it died, and within 48 hours all the others were gone as well. We did separate the last four from the flock, thinking they might be attacking the littles. I originally thought it was a virus since it seemed to move so quickly. I have another nest full about to hatch and need to know if this will happen to those as well. Any advice would be most appreciated.

The head-tossing and lethargy could be any number of things, from bacterial to fungal. Is the straw where the hen was brooding wet at all? Is there any mold anywhere in the immediate area?

I would take them in for necropsy. There are contagious diseases that can cause problems.

Are they outdoors where there are mosquitoes or black flies? Those can carry diseases ducklings are prone to.

Was the broody keeping them warm? Was it wet in the area? They could have gotten chilled.
