It was doing great and it kept going under its mother all day to stay warm but before nightfall the mother began to push it out and only sat on the other four. We bought it inside and set up a lamp and fed it with a syringe ,i stayed up til 2 looking out for it but by 6 am it was dead. I am devastated. I don't know ,could I have done anything more to save it?

Welcome, sorry about your chick

Mother Hen pushed it out of the nest for a reason, so I really doubt there was anything to be done for it. You tried your best, take comfort in that,

I'm very sorry about your chick! :(

As boskelli1571 said, don't blame yourself; you did your best! You did nothing wrong- you tried to help the chick and made sure that it was comfortable until the end. You did everything you could: gave it warmth, food, and love.

Sometimes mother hens will abandon chicks if they are weaker or they know, by instinct, that it's ill/unfit. Other times, they'll abandon a chick simply because they can't/won't take care of so many. Or perhaps even for no reason at all.

No matter what the reason, losing a chick is devastating. I've been there before multiple times and it never gets easier. Take comfort in the fact that you still have four beautiful, healthy little chicks. :)

Thank You for your reassuring support. Losing any life, human and animal is taxing, especially when you invest so much. Its nice to know people can sympathise with my predicament .

It totally sucks when you loose a little one. Nature does really know what is best. It might have been weak or unwell and not going to make it.

You did your best and nature takes care of the rest.

I don't really know if this applies to chickens but a lot of animal mothers can sense if their babies have some defect or sickness that will kill them and then they will have no more to do with them. I don't think there was any more you could have done. Soooooo sorry. :(
