why did my quail chicks die?

We saw one of our 4-day old quail chicks (Cookie) sleeping and the other birds were stepping on it and it wasn't moving so we took Cookie out and tried to give it water but it died, after that we had her on her back and found something that looked like an organ of some-sort sticking out of Cookies' abdomen.
Does anyone know what it is, how to fix it, or if it's contagious?
(one other chick died of the same thing this morning.)

This comes to mind because I was reading about it last night, but maybe omphalitis? I am so sorry, this must be heartbreaking for you
