Why did my roo do this?

Thanks, everyone, for all the feedback. I had already made a voice memo of the sounds, and figured out how to turn it into a video and post on YouTube. I’ll attach the video here (hopefully 😬). As soon as I hit record he quieted down some; he usually makes this sound at a higher volume.

That sounds like a “conversational”’tone to me. We have a Favorelles cockerel that is very vocal as compared with our other chickens, and he makes similar sounds when I walk in his pen or feed him treats.

Phew! That’s a relief! He hasn’t otherwise been behaving as if he’s upset, or anything is wrong, but the sounds he was making worried me when I couldn’t google what it meant. I was worried that I didn’t understand my guy as much as I thought, or else being a poor chicken guardian.

Be aware that cockerels who are too familiar toward you can become aggressive. We see it over and over again in BYC, a sweet tempered boy, coming into his hormones, suddenly attacks 'for no reason.' But it's never for no reason, the owner just didn't recognize the signs. What you describe just might be those signs, or they might not be. I do not let any cockerel get in my personal space, just as a precaution. Shoo him off, be consistent, let him know the boundaries.

Any pointers on where I can learn more about this?

Here's one good article. There are many other articles and threads, perhaps some of the other peeps here can link their favorites:

Thank you!! I’ve only had time to skim it , but am already certain the article you linked is much more thorough than what I was finding! I kept finding articles, books, podcasts, and videos all giving the same, very basic info about cockerel and rooster behavior. I’m typically a skilled researcher, and was getting very frustrated! I greatly appreciate the help! Glad I finally became a BYC member rather than a guest! I’ve been having trouble lately sifting through content on this site to find what I want (in fact, Google has provided more relevant BYC results than searching on BYC has), but I hope to get through the learning curve soon!
