Why did my rooster just die?

I did notice that some of the girls have very, very watery diarhhea. I've looked up past threads for this and I have just now given them plain yogurt to eat.

I've also added a huge layer of dirt/sand for their run to cover up any traces of old feces to prevent contamination.

Is there anything else I should do? ? ? ? ?

*There is no change in behavior which is good. They have been free ranging peroidically today.

it's possible they have picked up cocci..

sometimes, if they are healthy one day, dead the next..
it could be that he ate something bad while free ranging..
any chance he could have been exposed to lawn/garden chemicals? weed killers? rodent poison?
stagnant water? dead mouse?

concerned about the watery diarrhea..

The answer is no to all your questions. I am also concerned about the diarrhea problem. What are the signs and symptoms of cocci? Is it treatable? I better start researching.

I forgot to mention that when I moved the dead roo a lot of pus-like ooze came out of his vent. Not sure if this is part of the decomposition process or a symptom of an illness.

i know ,, this might sound awful.. but what if u do it yourself? i would, if it was me.. i know it might be kinda sad cutting open ur own roo.. but u could def see if the organs looked normal,, u could definatly find parasites in the digestive trac if there was any.. and,, there is that disease that they get that if not vaccinated they get tumors in their body and u might find a tumor...

Donna, Speckled Hen and her dh did one theirselves and have posted pics to show what normal should look like and what they found. You know the boys would think they were in dirty jobs if they saw you do this and would be impressed. LOL

I actually did think about cutting it open. But when that stuff oozed out I got really grossed out.

Funny Carrie! Holden was trying to open it's eyes after he found out it was dead. I made him wash up!

I'm going to go and feed the girls some oatmeal to help with the diarrhea issue. Good idea?
