He knew he must flee to the land of free chickens to escape persecution from his owner's culinary practices. By crossing the dangerous highway, he took matters into his own talons; if he were to die by making this risky move, it would be the liberation of dying a free rooster that would justify his attempts.
So driven with determination, he did reach the other side of the road, but found it a wasteland of inhospitable circumstances. This time, there was nowhere to run.
