Why didn't anyone warn me ducks are so messy??

That is us to a T! Mine HATE it when I have to pick them up to move them and fall over eachother and their dishes to get away. The male is much worse than the female, though. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong, so it is so good to hear that someone else has had the same experience. Being that I am so new to raising ducklings and chicks, I didn't really know what to expect. My chicks and roo love to be held though, so I still get to snuggle with them and can enjoy just watching the ducks.

I gave my girls a large roasting pan w/ water in it today. They are soo happy! In and out in and out! Such fun!

Mine think I'm gonna kill them everytime I open the pen.

Oops! Too funny! They are like kids with spaghetti...the food and water HAS TO GO EVERYWHERE! I couldn't wait to get them out of the garage! I love the khakis... they're sort of plain looking, but very pleasing... congratulations!

My ducks also act like I am going to harm them. We have held them and cuddled with them since we picked them up from the feed store and they are not friendly at all. They act like I am going to kill them, they actually run from us, unless we are throwing them treats. LOL

Like I said on a previous post, I think the predator/prey instinct in ducks is much, much higher than in chickens, that's why they are so skittish. I've watched mine in the yard and if they hear any strange noise they are on alert. The chickens, on the other hand, would stand there and let a herd of elephants trample through the yard without moving. I think it just has to do with the species and how far the predator/prey instinct has been bred out.

They're still fun though. Our lead duck, who I believe is a boy, is named Zipper. Last night he proved himself perfect for that name. For no reason at all, he would jump up from wherever he was and race around the yard with the other two in hot pursuit. Then he's rest for a bit and do it again. It was hilarious! Scares the bejeebers our of our cats but oh well!

Kodiakchicken, thanks for telling me this is normal behaviour for ducks. Our ducks never seem to be totally relaxed, always on the look-out for something too. Maybe we have watch ducks!

Mine had better be guard ducks... someone down the street a ways lost all their chukar, pheasant, and turkeys to a bear last night...

I had this lady over yesterday because she wanted to buy some runners and we walked into the barn and found a runner duck on TOP of the hay bales!
