They eat them because they’re good and yummie. Pick up your eggs promptly if you can don’t let them sit.
Once they get a taste they can actively peck them open.
Mine got a taste from a softy that was laid. One of my chickens would then peck eggs and they all would join in.
What worked for me was ceramic eggs. My hen that would peck the eggs open soon developed a sore beak and decided that the eggs were not worth pecking any longer. It’s been 4 months now and I have not had a problem. Seems to of broken her bad habit. Well worth the price. They’re fairly inexpensive. Best wishes
