why do geese ostracise each other after being together for years?

I guess that is one of life's great mysteries. We have 7 geese. One gander has 4 females. One gander and one female are a couple. The larger group has their house and the couple has there own house. Each day, when they are let out, the gander from the couple goes off with the larger group and his "wife" stands off at the side or walks along/alone behind the rest. If she gets too close the females in the larger group run her off. Then at night, the larger group goes into their house and the "husband" gander goes back to his "wife" and they go into their house. What is going on there Lord only knows. But that is just the way it is.
