Why do hens yell when they are done laying?

I read a book that says hens view their egg as gifts to a dominant member of their "flock". It could be a head hen, rooster, human, etc. I think that's what the "Egg Song" is all about. "I laid you an egg because I love you. Will you collect it?"

Did anybody ever think it might be a "Booty-Call"? After all, they've finished birthing that last egg and ready to make another baby, aren't they?

From what I've always been told, it's a call to the males in saying they're ready for, you know, business, - and the proof of course is the egg.

If you don't want hens that make that noise, get gamefowl.

(American Gamefowl like Hulseys, Butchers, Roundheads, Hatch, etc. and Oriental Gamefowl like Asils, Malays, Shamos, Thai, etc) They don't make a peep.

We have two young girls that have just started to lay in our mixed group. Today, they would hop in the box sit for about 5 minutes and jump out singing the eggie song. I would go look and NO egg. They both kept doing this today for about 2 hours. Neither is egg bound so they are just REALLY confused.

We also have a Roo that does the egg song for his hens. Everytime they lay an egg HE does the singing!
