I think they do it because they prefer to eat off the floor...
..or boredom or neurosis could play a part too.
Even with my 'waste free' feeder, I have a few who dig and dig and dig and are able to get some out onto the floor. SMH.
I've seen this pile right up to the edge of the opening,
am working on adding something there to stop this....
...and it will also keep them from rubbing the feathers off their neck on that edge.
