Why do my chickens keep trying to escape?

I have two chickens, they are really stubborn when the sun starts to set. They walk around looking for ways to escape their little area I've made for them. They have a coop, and an open area. Around 8pm every night I put them in the coop and close it up.

They go into the nesting box and try to push the top open (it opens so I can collect eggs) so they can get out. What are they doing? What do they want? Thanks in advance.

Hi! I also have 2 chickens, black australorps and around the same time as you stated (when the sun starts setting) they become fixated on their run fencing and pacing back and forth until they find an opening (covered by tarps) they can jump over. We’ve spent so much money on different taller fencing and they are still figuring ways. So now we are going to buy a closed in run (big cage looking thing) and just put their coop in there. Right now it’s their coop with a makeshift fence pen built around it. We need a roofing for sure which is annoying because we just keep spending money on these guys and only one is laying baby eggs 😂
