A latex-based paint would be fine, especially if the hutch will be outside (easy to wipe clean). I'd steer clear of oil-based paint unless you give it a LOT of time to gas off (gotta protect those little bird lungs). When I did my aviary, I used oil-based deck stain and gave it over a week to dry; now water just runs right off. As long as there are no big flakes the birds could eat, there isn't much modern paint that could hurt them once it's dried.

If you're building with wood, no. Then you'd need a stain (deck stain works well for outside applications) or paint.

That looks more like it. Just make sure you pay attention to the transparency, if that'll be important to you. The one you linked is probably better than paint, and you can find it in multiple colors.

I love my avery. But my house came with a chicken coop with flight pen so jackpot. If i run more birds next year i may make some hutchrs
