Why Do People Buy Live Chicks From Breeders and Farm Stores‭?

Pics
There’s a bunch of people that live in neighborhoods with no real ability to even free range chickens. They’re neighbors may not appreciate it and most in this kind of setting aren’t allowed to have a rooster at all. I suppose what I’m getting at is the people that have the ability to run a similar system probably already do. The people that raise chickens in a way you disagree with and who your book might be targeting won’t be able to based on laws and available space.

No...you misunderstood. My point was when you post your opinions here and you have not experienced having a backyard flock people would say you don’t know what your talking about BECAUSE you’ve not done it.
Just like if I wanted to talk about behaviors of wild chickens I would not know what I was talking about because I’ve never done it.
My whole goal was to make your information more appealing.
Your research seems interesting. I know you come across differently while posting. And that’s too bad. Perhaps more people would read if you were kinder in your approach. Like I’ve posted before.
I will practice what I preach.
I can’t judge because I have never experienced chickens as you have. So walk in my shoes before you judge. It’s only fair.

@Shadrach I have read all of your stories. Honestly there’s nothing new there. There’s thousands of people that raise chickens similar to you but they don’t sit and overanalyze everything. They don’t simply because it’s not needed. The chickens do just fine free ranging and coming back to their coops to lay eggs and sleep for the night.
You mention the origins of chickens in your articles. Why don’t you try raising gamefowl. They are far stronger and more disease resistant than the birds you currently have.
People have raised gamefowl totally free range on walks for a very long time. As I said I do believe your trying to reinvent the wheel here.
Where you are located your system may work perfectly but someone who receives multiple feet of snow in winter it could be a disaster.
Everyone’s location and space is different. There is never going to be one system that works best for everyone.
I have many free range birds that were hatched on the ground, raised there and sleep in the trees.
I’ve never taken a chicken to the vet and don’t plan to.
I'm pleased you've read the stories. There's nothing new under the sun I beleive the saying goes.
It's a book. I't s meant to entertain.
I would love to raise game fowl. They would be much better suited to this environment.

I guess they won't like the book then.
If I was intending on selling the book, I might be interested in the back yard chicken experience in order to attract the US market.

I intend to publish free (or as low a cost as possible). It's not a money making venture.
I joined the site because it's the best site on the net, barring a couple I looked at from Australia.
I think, given the responses here, which would seem to be enemy territory, that some back yard chicken keepers will enjoy it.
Lots of comments are based around the backyard expeience, which seems to be more prevelant in the US than the rest of the world.

I was under the impression that this book would be for profit. I thought you were offering something new in terms of chicken keeping.
Countries, climates, breeds of chickens all make a big difference in how birds will be able to be kept.

Ever hear the expression you get more with a carrot than you do with a stick?
It means to offer something sweet (or kind)
Instead of something
Hurtful.
And yes (if I could speak for all Americans)
We ROCK! When it comes to our FLOCK!:wee

(You may not understand that)

You can't realisticaly do this unfortunately because you can't walk in others shoes.
There are lots of posts here I find really offensive that the majority here don't bat an eyelid to. I don't go and rip into the poster because I don't agree with their view; if I'm interested, I start a thread of my own. Looking now, this thread has had 5329 views.
This is good for the forum. People don't have to read the thread. People don't have to like me. I don't have to like them. It's the way of the world.

Well hope you hire a good PR man.
Cause if selling this book is important to you, ya need to sell yourself. Just the way of the world.
I think I understand where your coming from. I don’t take things personally at all.
But if this forum is a sounding board for you.... then listen.
It’s all good.

As you've metioned, there are other people with a chicken keeping system similar to mine so no it's not revolutionary. There just aren't many people here that keep chickens like I do here. Some are closer than others. As you've pointe out, as have may others, not everybody can keep chickens like this. This doesn't mean I have to cater for the majority every time I post. You know, freedom of speach and all that.;)
