You said it was a creature like an oversized mink, so it was a Martin, likely a pine Marten. Minks are not good climbers and will not try to get away from you by running up a tree. Pine Martens are semi arboreal and do try to escape from predators by climbing.

And according to you Pine Martens are protected there so yes, you did something illegal. Also Pine Martens have nearly the same fur color as American mink. The main difference between the two is Pine Martens are more slender and larger than wild American Mink and they are semi arboreal.

I am sorry but it is very clear that you killed a Pine Marten, it is Marten btw not Martin, American mink are semi-aquatic and are horrible climbers. Unlike the Marten who is semi arboreal and at home in the trees. Also, the way you said "like an oversized mink" clearly indicates that you knew it was not a mink but similar to one, and Martens fit that role well. They are both from the same family.
