Thank for your replies everyone. Canadian here, so we don't have it. A few of my friends and I were disscussing it.

I think it's when the stock markert crashed? Is this true, or just a figment of my mind?

Yep...it's their hope to sell enough goods to be in the black...
I know birdaholic is wrong because I ate till I nearly burst yesterday and yet I looked forward to todays leftovers almost as much as yesterday's meal

Years ago when I worked retail, I was told that in addition to finally being ahead financially, it was because the date was blacked out for all retail employees (no vacation allowed to be requested for that day).

To me, black friday is blacked out for any chance of shopping! It's a day I stay home!
