Why do they do that?

ok this may be a stupid question. My chickens are Polish(2), red sex link (3) and mutts (4). They have a nice big coop with 8 nesting boxes built onto one wall. The problem I am having is whether I put shavings or straw in the boxes, the girls just kick all the bedding out and lay eggs on the wood bottom. Any idea why they do this and how to stop it?

How big are the boxes? Maybe they are just trying to make more room. [IMG]

Put a bigger lip on the nest box so that they are unable to scratch the bedding out.
