i hang mine, i have a tie down wrapped around a 2x4 (on the roof) thaat hangs down.. gravity makes the actual waterer stay level. its about chicken back height and i very rarely have trouble with it,, once a week there is a small amount of dirt in the pan. i just tip it over and the dirt falls out, no straw, no feathers and no poop. water is clean all the time till it runs out,,
im new to this whole chicken thing,, but if you provide a place for the chickens to roost they will.
A nice tall water bottle is a great place for them to sit. hang it and they wont even think about roosting there,,,
