Why Do We Raise Chickens?

Because it's FUN!!!!

Because they are really smart and empathetic creatures that are greatly underestimated! I just love them! All 41 of them!

Well, we tell our friends and family it's for nice practical reasons like fresh, healthy eggs, organic fertilizer, and pest control, but that's just to give them a reason that the chicken-challenged would understand. Really, I think a lot of us would have them even without all that. They're fun, full of personality, and friendly. They're also honest...If they like us they coo and follow us like puppies, and when they're ticked off they peck our feet. You never have to guess where you stand with them. Plus, they're cheaper than parrots. --Nikki

TOTALLY agree, Nikki!

Also, theoldchick - you aren't old! How about thewisechick? :)
That name came from work. I was the oldest person at the place I worked at. A client noted I had been there a while and called me 'TheOldChick" every time she came in the clinic. I ain't as young as I used to be, though...

Oh! I thought of some more reasons! Chickens make excellent garbage disposals. Leftover scrambled eggs, noodles, corn, fruit, veggies...the list goes on and on! SO much less stuff going to the landfill than there used to be from our house.

Also, they're cuter and more colorful lawn ornaments than plastic flamingos.

I was raised with the mind set of they were food and ONLY food. We were never allowed to pet, chase, or otherwise watch the chickens. It might make them upset and cause them to stop laying, or give them heart attacks. Now that I have my very own flock of chickens I have watched them make bonds, had them hop in my lap for scritches, watched my roo call his ladies and do a wierd head shake thing. Then watched him feed the smaller pullets. I have watched them preen each other and had them preen me. I have had a piece of sandwich stolen almost right out of my own mouth. I have had one tell me under no certain terms I was late letting them out in the morning. And been told that I was late shutting the coop up at night. I have had babies scared to death from the dog attack huddle on and under me refusing to allow me out of their sight.

I got my birds for food and a little extra money. What I got in return was hours of joy and companionship from an animal that could technicly live with most of its head gone. Who knew they were such sweet and sociable creatures with personalities bigger than most dogs or cats.
