Why Do You Breed?????

Hi! The chicken I *wanted* didn't exist, therefore I must breed it.

Reasons why I breed:

#1 ~ I get to raise tons of cute little babies and only keep them long enough for me to sex. Then, they're sold to support they're parents' upkeep.

#2 ~ As a Hobby

#3 ~ I have had several different breeds of chickens and haven't decided on my permanent choice, but when I do, I would love to show them.

#4 ~ I'm going to begin breeding Snowy Calls soon and would like to help preserve them. (I haven't been able to find that many breeders who still raise them for show)

I have never considered what other people want to buy. I really could care less.

I keep the breeds that appeal to me. If someone else wants to buy ducklings from me, fine. If not, that's fine, too.

I breed to improve, or at least preserve, my favorite breeds. I raise meat and eggs, and I show my birds.

It's a challenge to breed the very best bird possible, which means it is not a hobby that gets boring.

Did you get your buckeyes from a hatchery? Are they show quality?

First of, I'm still acquiring stock. All my Buckeyes have been from breeders, but the ones I've hatched and raised did not turn out to be "show quality." Not surprising since very few birds hatched (especially when starting out) turn out "show quality."
The people that I have stock/am getting stock from, have taught me about the breed. So I've learned much about what to cull for, what to select for, ect for the Buckeye breed.
