WHY do you have geese?

'S You guys are so funny, I can relate summer vacation just started, I need a vacation really bad already!!!!

My geese are lovely to look at and keep my orchard mowed down. They also keep the bug population in the orchard down and they clean up my dead bees. We have a hive with 10,000+ bees and some die every day. When that happens the other bees push them out of the hive and the geese eat them. They also make a great deterrent for predators who want to go after my chickens. Dogs and Hawks and the like, will not mess with a goose and are less likely to go after anything when geese are around. I have geese in every chicken area that is not completely closed in from the top.

So those are my reasons besides the fact that goslings are just super-cute!

Some people also have them to sell feathers or eat them or both.

Sometimes i feel like i'm in some sick abusive relationship that i cant get out of with my gander..
One day he'll be my love and follow me around with devotion all day long, he'll make his baby goose love sounds to me......if i sit down he'll try to sit in my lap and cuddle with me...
and the next day....,he'll beat the crap outta me

.... pinching, flogging, chasing and biting, honking rudely at me..(i just know hes cussing me out...)... the whole deal...
*sigh* Whats a girl to do?? I need some therapy or something... maybe i can go to a shelter for women that are abused by their ganders or something...

I breed my geese to keep the breed going ( Dewlap Toulouse) as my SAE project for FFA. FFA is sorta like 4-H but with more buisness and for older kids. Also, along with marathonmom I use geese and turkeys to protect my chickens and ducks from the harrier hawks here. They could carry off a big chicken no problem, and when I saw them eyeing my banties I got a pet turkey. As soon as they see a hawk, cat, or similar they'll honk/bark and fuss at it till it goes away. We have coyotes here and I haven't had one in my yard since they are scared of my geese.

And they are a delight and I can't help but keep them.

I have different reasons for each of my geese. Here they are chronologically.

last year.
1st goose - toulouse gander - protection. was supposed to be a girl. too bad I am a vegetarian..

4 more geese - chinese geese - company for lone goose. now they lay eggs for the farmer's market.
this year.
10 cotton patch - breeding program. (already reserved 10 for next year)
2 poms - just cause.
1 am blue - it was a lone goose from a BYC'er. I took it off his hands.
12 embryos - for the farmer, who only wants 6. the rest..?
whatever else I get - because I obviously need more geese.

When it all comes down to it, I love my geese.

And the best way to get someone to leave you alone to study is to start ranting about your goose farm.

i got a goose because i heard they are very affectionate when raised from goslings. my chicks are somewhat friendly but still are nervous around people but my gosling is so friendly and affectionate that she follows me every were and i can even put a harness on her and take her on a walk

I LOVE that. I feel the same way about my gander too! I love him, but he beats the crap out of me on a regular basis! Nobody understands why I don't just dump the chump, but I love him! And I know he doesn't MEAN to do it, he just can't help himself.... see? It is just like a really, REALLY bad relationship... only with feathers...
