Why do you love your chickens?

I just love the way our "girls" (chickens, each with its own name) rush over to investigate any outdoor project we do, as if to ask, "Are you sure you're qualified to do that?" Trying to keep them from taking over as I was painting a picnic table and outdoor steps red was just too nutty - you know how they love the color red! I love the way certain tame ones hurry over when they notice I'm digging & turning over sod and the "worm wars" that occur over who gets to the worms first.

What is not to love?
Mine are adorable, and usually completely insane (just like their owner

I love my chickens because when I first got them (3 of them from TSC) no one told me that Cornish Cross were meat chickens...how devistating to find that out...Well we already had emergency vet visit because the Roo got sick when he was 2.5 weeks old...Vet said he wouldn't make it through the night and $120 later...he lived in my hoodie for 2.5 days and slept beside me on my nightstand and is still healthy and strong! They are now 3 months old!

We have lost one to a raccoon - but she had a funeral and is buried with my rottie and dane and kitties that died of old ages and now we have more chickies that we love dearly.

I have never had dogs come to me as much as my chickies do - food or no food, my 7 babies (only as old as 4th of July) and want to be held, cuddled and sleep on my chest for hours on end while I lay on the couch and watch tv.

Someone said that chickens do not make good pets. They need to own a chicken before they make that statement

Well, I love my chickens because I have wanted them for 30yrs.... It was well worth the wait but I am STILL waiting on eggs! LOL

Ruthie, I love your story.. being a caregiver for the elderly for 9yrs, it warms my heart to hear that story. I hope you get to enjoy a 1000 more new ones...Dixie
