Why do you need to follow up 2nd dose after worming with Wazine?

if Wazine only treats adult roundworms, why do you need to follow up with a second dose in 7 days? I have used Valbazen wormer the last 3 years and feel my hens needed a rotation of a different wormer so I used Wazine in the water. What are your thoughts on not doing a follow up dose? Or should I follow up with a different product. I have had issues with roundworms in the past. I have 21 chickens and it would be difficult to worm them individually. Suggestions?

You do the first dose so that they're dead and not laying anymore eggs. You give the second dose to eliminate the eggs that have hatched and matured since the first dose before they can lay more eggs.

Wazine should be repeated in 7-10days per instructions on the bottle. I'm not sure I understand why you would not want to follow up with a second dose since Wazine is mixed in with the flock's water, it is easier to administer than Valbazen.

@sylviethecochin has it right - 1st treatment basically eliminates the adult worms and the 2nd follow up treatment eliminates the ones that have hatched.

How did you treat with Valbazen? This is administered individually and then repeated in 10days.

I did the bread method, but my younger chickens dont want the bread and it gets crazy trying to keep the ones who want it away from the ones who dont. Led to some double dosing. I figured Wazine now and Valbazen in fall. I will follow up with second dose. I just figured in two weeks the larvae would not be considered adult roundworms.

Eliminating most of the larvae (eggs that have hatched) is the purpose of the 2nd dosage.

It's good that you are changing up the de-wormers so hopefully you avoid drug resistance. Bread method works o.k. for a small number of chickens. Next time, you may want to wait until everyone is roosting, then syringe the Valbazen into each one.

I understand completely, there was probably a free for all of beaks over the bread LOL
