Why do you raise Peafowl?

Ohio here so yes a lot of breeders of peafowl are in the northern State ,no trouble with the snow or cold.

My grandson and his Buddy..

Deerman, that photo of your peacock in the snow is absolutely stunning! It makes me want to run & pick up my paint brushes & canvas -- but unfortunately, I am still at work.

The one of your grandson is too cute for words!

I have peafowl because they bring me joy. They are beautiful to look at, they are curious to a fault, they make me laugh with their antics, they add a lot to our life. I have my chickens for basically the same reasons (except they aren't as pretty as the peas). I don't even like eggs - just to eat an egg - I do cook with them but; I give most of them away to family & friends.

The peafowl in the video were green peafowl, which in colder places need an indoor place with heat to weather the winter, but India Blues and all their varieties are hardy and can live in cold places without having an indoor heated place.

Noise is all about how many males you have. If you have a lot of males, it might get noisey at times, but you can always sell extra males so you don't have too much noise. I personally love the noise they make, and it is easy to get them started making the "Aaaaahhh ahhh" noise. It is only really loud if you are standing right there and the male is facing you and screams, but otherwise it isn't a bother. They only call durring the summer breeding season. Then they get quiet and you miss the noise. I think it also depends on the peacock. They tend to call if they hear something strange, so the more strange things your bird hears that he is not used to the more noise you will get from him I think. We have red tails here.

The peafowl automatically know when there is a hawk around. They stop and stare up into the sky like this:

Hawks shouldn't mess with adult birds, but if you had a peachick that wasn't watching or close to its mom then it probably would become hawk food if the hawk spotted it.

I am not sure about how they are which chickens because I don't have chickens. I do know several people who keep them in the same pen as chickens (not recomended because of things they can catch from the chickens when in close contact but free-ranging together is okay). I have seen a picture before of a peacock fighting a rooster, so I just guess it depends on if the peafowl like chickens or not.

We have a minature poodle that acted interested in the birds so we decided to let her in the pen with them. Our dog ignored them and was more interested in sniffing around in their pen. Our dog made the mistake of going into a small pen that conected to the big pen and of all the peafowl, my small little peahen named Pip snuck up behind our dog and jumped on her! Now our dog hides behind my mom when we are near the birds. Pip didn't hurt her, but was trying to tell her she was not welcome in their pen I guess. Just watch out, some dogs will run at the birds and frighten the birds, and some dogs might kill peafowl. It all depends on the dog.

Peafowl are said by many to be protective of other birds like chickens. A local peafowl breeder has a great story about a time she spotted a hawk that had just grabbed one of her chickens. The hawk was on the ground about to eat the chicken when all her peacocks surrounded the hawk harrasing it to leave. The hawk jumped off the chicken and flew away. She also said her peacocks chased a stray pitbull out of her yard too.

I hope all that helps.

My peafowl have control over my Emu.................... but only because they chased the Emu when they were chicks, just for fun. My Peafowl typically get along with all the other birds, only the occasional squabble between a cocky rooster or Tom turkey.

I enjoy our peafowl. My fiance had always wanted them so I figured why not? Told him to get outside build a pen and I had a surprise coming in 1 week for him. Got him a pair of a India Blue Pieds. We penned ours with our 8 ducks. Everyone gets a long great, however the ducks rule the pen. We just added a quad of midnights to the original pair (They'll be split into two pens during the breeding months). I was amazed at how fast they bonded and took to each other. The 4 new guys who were very skittish settled right into the routine. They aren't afraid to come up to beg for treats... Granted we cannot touch or handfeed any of ours, but we can get within inches of them.

I just love to watch them. They are unique, and so pretty. Funny to watch, and to watch the social structure. Of course i'm finding more and more colors I want

(I think next on my list are the bronze...) so we are building onto the enclosure next year. with several "sections" that can be closed off and seperated.

Cherokee Trail Farm : Thank you. I will check into that.

deermanL WOW! To both those pics! Yep snow doesn’t bother them! You don’t supplement heat in the winter and they free range all winter?

TerriLaChicks : Will you share with us 1 or 2 of the more memorable antics that made you laugh?

MinxFox : Your avatar is so beautiful! That’s your India blue pied white eye right?
Peafowl seem protective of their surroundings – does everyone find this to be true?
Your little dog sound like my chicken could take it on and well lets face it – they ARE chickens. My rescued dog is a 1 ½ year old Golden retriever “puppy” and I’m still trying to break him of the chicks being play toys even though he was exposed to them since they were 1 day old and behaves beautifully----- when we are within sight.
Love the hawk story – wonder if that hawk ever came back or went on to friendlier hunting grounds…

chickenzoo: If I ever get down to Florida, I will HAVE to ask permission to visit your farm! Sounds like Shangri-La! Safe from snakes and unwanted critters because they are harassed away by your peapowl.

shchinchillas: You can’t pet yours – is that because you didn’t get them young enough ( as previously stated )and they didn’t imprint?

Everyone: 1)My chickens are vaccinated against: Mericks, Fowl Pox (we have wild turkey on the property), New Castle and Bronchitis. The chickens and peafowl should be safe from eachother…right?
2) Do you clip a wing to keep them from flying away?

I went to this site and got stuck at the diseases catagory - Are they very fragile and sickly birds unless great precautions are taken?
