Hi just thought id share an opinion as i am experienced at showing horses and dogs and my son likes the chickens....the journey is a big part of the showing....pick breeds you like stick with it and learn...my son has silkies some great ones we have purchased from top breeders, he has nankins an unknown heritage bantam that we love and take to every show tho we will never win over the leghorns but we can get our birds compared amongst themselves by judges so we can work on improving the line and a BV or RV is a big deal.....I have shown horses at the highest levels been scoffed at many times but just stick with it and have always managed to come out on top...there is a bay Mustang stallion in IL and he just won a big award at Dressage at Devon and your horse jumps pretty nice and as for dogs well they are just tough but once again just keep on going and you can get there....chicken shows are a blast i really enjoy going with my son and helping with all the birds and the breeding and the people on a whole are really great so its a win situation whether you come out with Champ/BB or nothing...just enjoy going if it was always about winning nobody would show....just my 2 cents...and my husband wont compete in anything as he has to win everytime wheres the fun in that...
Why not show if you don't win is the better question
For me it's about meeting new people that have the same interest as me, It's about learning, getting to see what other people think weather it be bad or good. and of course having FUN

ditto.... it is fun and we love meeting other people that enjoy the same hobby. We made lifetime friends through our birds. Winning is a bonus and it helps pay the show and feed bills. We get lucky and win sometimes, but it didin't start out that way.

I think if the top show winners/ breeders were to be asked, when they started showing they would say they never started out winning ether.
I was at the Dennys on Saturday morning before heading to the Shawnee show and when I went to pay the bill the workers were laughing because there was a chicken show in town and why would anyone want to do that..... I told them I did
and i liked it
Our friends give us a hard time about the birds. Now one of those friends has a pair of our Columbian Wyandotte bantams and wants to show next year.
Mom did Persian cats, I do chickens. I personally want to promote the hobby. By putting out quality, that attracts the new enthusiast. I also hope to bring in more interest in my given breed and variety. For $3 a bird it is a great way to advertise your name, and to top it off you get a trained expert to critique your animal. If your smart you then after the show, you can get the judges to critique other animals you bring and did not show. Well worth the entry fee, and who cares who wins, your already a winner by showing. I don't expect to win anything. Usually IF I do it is because no one else entered that variety. Rarely I do any better.
Why do people buy lotto tickets? Why scope the real estate for sale (when no even in the market)?
Why do we bother to bathe? Why put on a decent shirt in the morning? Why get a haircut?
Why plant flowers? Or put in a birdhouse?
Why watch a football game? Why go to the theater?
Why see a movie... read a book... play a game?
Why take pictures? Why paint a picture or a wall for that matter?
Because it's what Adds Value to YOUR LIFE... even if small, even if only you appreciate it, it's value added.
Depends on the person of course... For many guys (not DH but just about every other guy I know) football/hockey/baseball/NASCAR... gotta pay for cable... could be doing yardwork, spending time with kids, getting OT hours... doesn't appear to give anything, but it does cost... so WHY do you watch those??? Why would you spend money and drive out to watch them??
Next time he throws that out there look him right in the eye and ask him Why Do YOU *insert whatever he does that YOU think costs him money/time but gives nothing in return*?
