It's actually cotournix but not sure on gender yet. It'll be 6 weeks on Sunday and, so far, no crow, foam, or egg so we'll see.

Cute birds! Are they molting, by any chance? Mine used to have those pixie cut feathers around the back of her head. If its genetic maybe one day people can breed quails that look like maccaroni penguins.

I guess you could breed anything to look like anything, as clearly possible in the below photo.
