Why does my chicken suddenly run around?

Greetings chicken whisperers!

I have a young Australorp hen who lays regularly and eats well. She drinks water regularly too.

She seems perfectly normal, then *bam* she suddenly runs around the chicken run like crazy!

Sometimes it seems like she's scaring the wild birds away and sometimes there seems to be no reason at all.

Is this normal? Or is she being bitten by a lice or something?

Your words of wisdom will be much appreciated. I'm basically clueless when it comes to chickens, I haven't had them long. All I do is provide lots of clean food and water, safety from predators, clean bedding, and things to see and do.

Thanking you!

Once you've ruled out all the external influences such as parasites, or stimulus outside the run, you're left with physiological abnormalities.
brain damage, chemical imbalances, vision problems and plain boredom.

Oh wow. She's got a vet appointment coming up in a couple of months, I'll tell the vet about it and see what she says.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

What’s did the vet say? ( I know this thread is a year old but ah well )
He said she's healthy, happy and playful. She was very young back then. She hasn't done the stamp and charge for a long time now.

I was very inexperienced back then and didn't realise young chickens are playful. Looking back, it was a foolish misconception on my part.

Ah I see, but make no mistakes and you will never learn! That’s what I say 😉
