Why does my rooster stand still as a statue?

He's about 5 months old, just getting into adolescence, and we're starting rooster training, thanks to much good advice on here! Sometimes he just stands there for over a minute, still as a statue, seemingly looking at nothing at all. What does it mean??

The hens want to know what's up too. Today one went up to him, looked him all over, took a little test peck, and decided she liked this new side of him -- better than the one chasing her around and acting like a rooster maniac. That one was about two minutes long, didn't flinch or blink, long enough for him to go a little pale.

Our hens do this when the hawk is in the trees in the woods behind us. They will be as still as statues until he flies away, then it is back to business.

My rooster does this too ! Don't know why but he does !!

My two roosters stare each other out for mins
Neither moving just staring into each other's eyes

My 'adolescent' age rooster grew out of his dazed periods. He was truly impervious, you could poke him or hold a treat in his face and he wouldn't respond. I wondered if he had a problem, but I guess he was just growing up. Kind of like when a teenager stares into space.

When two of my hens stare right into each other's eyes, it is a pecking order standoff. It ends either with one going about her business (she lost), or somebody gets pecked.

The rooster does stand and look, but he is the sentry of the flock. Sometimes he is checking me out and sizing me up (again)! Why does he still think he can take me? Because he is a rooster. (Agressive but tame, usually responds to Come and Go Away.)

Two of my hens did this for several minutes, impervious to anything, didn’t even blink, didn’t come rushing over as they normally do to see if I had treats. Finally one of them and my other hen (I just have 3) began this extremely loud cackling. The one who was most frozen looking still didn’t come out of it for a minute or two longer.
