Why does this coop say it will house 12 - 15 chickens?

Cindy,

I have that chicken coop. I also have a 12'x30' run that it sits in.

I NEVER imagined it could hold 12-15 hens. I knew it was false information when I bought it. But I also knew I was housing only 5 hens in it, MAX.

If the hens were to just roost in this coop, then yes, it could house 12-15 hens, for roosting only. (Even THAT would be crowded.) IF they spent every other moment of their lives outside!

What irritates me is that most sellers will take advantage of people new to chicken-keeping. Greed is, after all, the American Way it seems.

New people really need to do their homework BEFORE investing a dime.

For this there is no better place than BYC!!

My humble 2 cents,

LOl, I have 19 STANDARDS that live in a 4x8!!! Lol, they have a run that is about 100 feet long by 40 feet wide!! They are only in there to SLEEP

Six nest boxes - enough for 25 hens. A latch on the outside of the coop holds the next box lid open for easy collection

You missed this part, if it will only hold Max15 hens why did they install enough boxes for 25, do they think the 15 will have a sleep over and invite others over?

Maybe they figure that some people will squeeze in twice as many bantams as standards? It's just a guess, so otherwise I have no clue.

Funny about the nest boxes. I just passed a local ad on CL for a 6x6 coop (so that would be 7 chickens, max) and it has TEN nesting boxes inside the coop - not even sitting outside the wall to allow for more space in the coop. Given that 1 foot of the floor is gone from those, it's 30sq ft and truly can only fit 6 chickens. With ten boxes. ?!?!

I had 10 chickens in a 4x8 coop and had to enlarge it due to fighting. I can't imagine the problems with 10-15 chickens in 24 square feet. From what I have experienced my birds go in and out all during the day.

Sorry if I sounded rude!!!! Rain or shine, the girls and boy are OUT!!!!! I dont think they can stand to stay in their coop for more than 8 hours!!! We live in the San Fransisco Bay area, C.A.. Our coop is raised off the ground, so they just go under it when iot rains.
