Hi, I went out to the coop to check for eggs. There were 3 out there. I get all of them and noticed one has a whole on th ebig round air sack side?It as happened a few other times. Does anyone know why? Here is a pic.
I think it's from the egg dropping onto something a bit hard as the hen lays it? I get the same thing quite often. My hens scratch the shavings out of the next boxes and lay on the hard bottom of the box. I've put a two inch lip along the bottom of the entrance to the nest box to try and keep the nest material in there but they still scratch it out. Crazy girls!!
Your chickens probably aren't getting enough calcium. On top of that problem the nesting boxes probably need more litter in them. Give the chickens oyster shells free choice so they can get more calcium. Also when they don't get enough calcium for the egg shells their bones get weaker. This is due to the fact that they will take calcium from their bones to give to the egg shells.
