Why dub in OEGB and MOdern Game?

The bloodsport will be illegal in Louisiana soon.
My State is phasing it out in two years or less.

APA and other large scale shows require it but the smaller county-fair-type shows usually don't mind (at least a few that I have seen). I plan on getting some modern game bantams in the spring and I won't have them dubbed, but then again I'm not into showing.

I was hoping one of the true oegb breeders would jump in --

Dubbing isn't a glam statement - or for showing being a fighting breed they are known to go straight for the combs if they challenge another bird - they will rip the combs off and the victim will most likely bleed to death- Show cages sit very close together it is required so the birds are not put at risk-- especially when they bend to drink and their neighbors can grab the comb

I have one OEGB roo and he is pretty gentle but PQ so it is a non-issue for me at this point but if I hatch another they will both get dubbed -

I wouldn't dub. I just bought a pair of silver duckwings. I was attracted to OEGB because of how they look like miniature standards. The winterizing argument is lost with me. I live in central Texas and have no worries about frostbite. Why should my birds be disqualified because they are natural? The way god made them. My cocks will be cool looking natural looking little birds. I guess I won't get into showing them until rules change. I'll just enjoy them as is.

First of all OEGBs are a fancier creation, not something G-D created. They are the product of extensive selection & are not something that exists in nature.
Secondly, you need to dub if you plan to show because that's what the breed standard requires. If you don't want to dub, don't plan to show male OEGBs. Don't hold your breath "till the rules change.

When I bred OEGB I started not dubbing the males that I wasn't going to show (much easier to see ear lobe color since many varieties have white earlobe issues) but I found even in a mild Washington climate I would occasionally have frostbite issues on comb and wattles that seemed to be disproportionately large. So that is a factor as well, large thin comb and wattles are very susceptible to frostbite. So between that and picking at another as mentioned, dubbing is practical as well.

Like I said, My cocks will be cool natural looking little birds. I'll enjoy them as... OK.... "extensive selection" made them. Although I believe God has something to do with all living creatures. If you get a bird with no comb, wattles, or earlobes through selective breeding...that would be cool. I just have a problem with mutilation of any animal. Dogs ears clipped tails docked, I don't like that either. My hair is gray, I'm not going to dye it, I have crows feet and laugh lines, I'm not getting a face lift. IDK, its just a shame we can't enjoy livings thing as is. I can see if your in a cold area that surgery to prevent injury is necessary. But just for show.....I'll pass

P.S. don't they look cool as heck though......Neat little breed.

This represtents one of several positions often expressed here on BYC that I find hard to understand. "I like OEGBs but I don't like dubbing". Then you really don't like OEGBs as dubbing is part of what makes them OEGBs. What you like is very small single combed ckickens. Why not get Dutch Bantams? They are similar in size to OEGBs, come in many colours & don't have to be dubbed.
Other like statements I've seen here are: I like Cochins but I don't like the feathered legs; I like Polish but I don't like the crests [so they cut them off] & I like Muscovys but I don't like the caruncling. All these are identifying breed characteristics so how is it possible to "like" a breed while disliking that which identifies it as a breed?
