Why get ducks instead of chickens?

I was just checking out your new duck house on your website. Is that what you keep them in at night? Is it safe against predators?

IMO you should get whichever you are more attracted to. . .some people are "chicken people" while some people are more "duck people." Neither is right or wrong, it is just whatever you feel drawn to. . .Back when we first started talking about getting chickens for eggs, I loved the idea of the eggs but never felt that excited about the chickens. . .then, talking to some neighbors about it, they said "oh, you should get ducks." I never knew you could eat duck eggs or that they could lay so well. . .! Well, suddenly I felt *very* excited about the idea of getting ducks. So for me, the choice was obvious. Now our second time around (lost our ducks a couple of years ago), hubby said, why don't we get chickens this time? (He has forgotten that he likes duck eggs--LOL). Well, okay, but I still got way more excited about getting the ducks! (We have both now). So yeah, I am still a duck person over a chicken person. . .I love hearing them quack (don't know why everyone complains about the noise, to me it is music to the ears!) and how they answer when you talk to them. I love that they will imprint on you and follow you around. . .I love watching them splash around in their water--they are so amusing!
You should definately get pekins! Some people on here don't like them, but I just got some duckling and they are *so* much more friendly than our last ducklings (A hybrid of khaki cambells). They love to crawl all over me and jump onto my lap and snuggle in! I am not sorry of that choice at all!
Ok this is long, but I just wanted to say if you feel attracted to ducks. . .get some! And get whatever breed *you* feel the most attracted to. . .don't just get one because someone else talks you into it.
have fun!
Oh, and here is one more reason (my pekin duckling snuggled into my lap along with our gosling. . .):

I was able to get some duck eggs last night. This morning I had them in scrambled eggs and they were tasty. Tomorrow is the real test. How will they taste as a fried egg. I also found a hatchery that will sell us just ten as late as may 25th when we move into the new place.

To each his own, I suppose. In choosing for our place, a very small place in a city, I chose ducks because I've been told they eat more slugs, their poop is more watery than dry (so no blowing around as much), the layers tend to lay more, and they are much more disease-resistant, not needing antibiotic feeds and such. Also, mine won't roost, so the duck house can be smaller.

Those were my reasons. A side-bonus: Our family are water-lovers (wife is a triathlete and kayak instructor), so we understand each other!

Ducks rock. But I never had a chicken only the meaties and they are gross. My ducks are fun and have personality. Their eggs are better and they lay better. For me the best reason was they seem to need less in terms of care, housing, and food.

I love them. Right now I am trying to fight the desire to get a couple of Muscovy. Trying to fight trying to fight.

I have both ducks and chickens, by far the ducklings are more humorous and want to be with you than my chickens are which Hubby and I Love. We love our chickens though but theres somethign special about those ducklings!!! Check out my video I just posted and you'll see one of the many reasons why we love them so much!

So I just did the final test. I had a fried duck egg for lunch....Delish! I can't wait to get my ducks now. I read that the eggs are higher in cholesterol but your gonna die one day no matter what. Might as well enjoy your food.

The reports I saw mentioned how duck eggs have a lot more cholesterol. I wonder is that based on 2 eggs of the same size or are they comparing a 60g chicken egg vs a 100g duck egg.
