Why have a rooster? new Pg 10 video pg 13

What a great story we love our rooster he has a flock of 16. His name is Buddy and he is 3 years old buff orph. I know he would do the same thing. Ya gotta have a rooster!

My daughter's hen and the hen's mother were both taken by a coyote within minutes of each other, and yes, there was a rooster there. We didn't see the attack, so we don't know where the rooster was at the time, but the 3 usually hung out together. He may have been with the rest of the flock, and not able to get to our hens in time. I had a hand raised rooster (and hand raised hen of the same age) in my backyard (in the city limits) and had to get rid of him as he crowed all of the time. Once he matured, he also turned mean. So, we had to take him to an animal sanctuary where they didn't mind his crowing. Unfortunately, he died later in a heat wave. Now we just have 3 hens in the yard, and it is easier than having a rooster around. We do lock them up at night though!

It's VERY RARE for domestic cats to attack chickens. Generally chickens are too big for cats. I suspect it was another predator.

I love reading all of these stories on the roosters. I was adamant about getting rid of our roosters, but our little boy who is 10 said he just loved them so much he wanted to keep them. Unfortunately a raccoon got one of them, but we still have romeo who is a beauty, and really sweet, never comes at us and just wants to be with the hens. Reading the story from the Rooster Lancelot has convinced me to keep Romeo since I know he is a sweetie and will protect the hens. We had separated them because we were down so many hens and he was mating so much he was hurting them i.e. no more feathers on their backs. But once we let them out when we ocassionally let them free roam those hens run right to him!

I have to thank you for this wonderful story. People think I'm nuts that I insist on having a rooster. My last rooster was absolutely evil and spurred me if I turned my back on him, but he was a great protector of my chickens. Our major threat is hawks. I would be in the house and hear "Woosta" make his warning cry. I'd go outside and all the girls would be hidden in the bushes while Woosta stood out in the clearing, looking up at the sky with the attitude of "Come get me if you dare!" I loved him so much. He died of natural causes at age 8. I'm now starting a new flock and have the silliest looking rooster you've ever seen. Blue feet covered with feathers and a polish tuft on the top of his head. His body feathers are light read. He reminds me of Woody Woodpecker, so of course I've named him Woody. I've just gotten a new flock of 3-week old barred rock pullets, and even though Woody's only about 5 or 6 weeks old, he's already protecting them, corralling them when I got into the coop! I know he's going to be a great protector. And I can't wait until he starts crowing because I love the sound of a crow's reverie at 5 am or whenever. Always makes me smile.

Awesome! Thank you for sharing this story. It does give us insight that we need to understand. We are new to this. We have 11 two month old (so I guess you could say they are in their teens now) and no roosters, didn't think we wanted them because we are only looking for eggs at this point. You opened a whole new thought process for us. Thank again and God Bless!

That was a great story!Wtg Lancelot.I have always kept a rooster around, call me crazy but I love the sound of a rooster crowing. To me its all part of having a flock of chickens. If I could have more than 2 I would (I have had probs with fighting)Roosters are very beautifull and I love the variuos breeds and colors.I have 3 single comb brown leghorns that are about 4 mos old now, but I know I will have to sell a couple.I also have a RIR that is 4 yrs old now and a wonderfull crower but I think he needs some Viagra cuz hes not much of a lover anymore.I keep my chickens pened up otherwise they wouldnt last long in these Pa mtns...lots of predators!
I didnt know roosters were so brave as Lancelot but it does my heart and mind good!!Very interesting.

I totally agree with why people should have a rooster. I had one that we were forced to give away but he did the same thing and jumped a hawk that was going after one of my bantams. He literally dove on top of it. Roosters are truly awesome birds and I'm glad that Lancelot was ok after the attack.

Besides, he's so handsome!
