Why have a rooster? new Pg 10 video pg 13

My roo is a meany. If I don't watch out, he will flog me. So why haven't I gotten rid of him? He watches the hens! Such a protector.....almost as if to say, "Just doing my job, mam.

I refer you to my original post which you obviously did not read. But here it is again

We found the coyote's den and my diligence in hunting her and watching over my flock became paramount. I did everything I could to discourage the coyote and take away her sense of safety...it paid off, she moved the babies. That was one option that I had hoped would happen as a last resort, my choice was to hunt her down and then destroy her and then the youngsters. They are merely future predators and ones too young to fend for themselves without their mother, so I chose that option out of humane regard for the youngsters. (This decision is mine solely and NOT open to discussion, nor is it the point of this post so please leave it alone).

Now every evening and morning I have been walking all over (approximately 25 acres in a day) on either side of the road looking for the new den, listening for the sound of a pup in distress and taking my dog with me because I am sure he would hear the babies or smell them before I heard them. I have been unsuccessful. My intent from the moment the coyote grabbed my cochin and I found her den was to kill her and her pups because I would not let them starve. Once she moved them and then was killed, I have taken my time each day to search for those pups with the intent on destroying them mercifully because I DO care that their mother was killed by me.

If you feel unwell, then please use the back button which is a left facing arrow on the top of your computer screen and save the snide comments for yourself. I was very very proud of my rooster and very upset that I had to kill a nursing mother but my rooster is my pet...not a meal for this family or a predator. I do not eat my birds and rarely do I eat chicken to be honest. So what is confusing you....the fact I will protect my chickens and not let a coyote kill one or the fact that you could not kill a predator to protect yours or worse...a thought that makes me ill....that you would have no care if a coyote killed your chicken right in front of you?

Please feel free to PM me if you wish to discuss your distaste for my actions in protecting my sweet boy and we can take it up privately but please stop here in the thread because I do not want my thread closed, I am proud of my boy and he is an example of everything noble within a good rooster.

On a flip side...I invite you to research coyotes...they will also eat your cats, small dogs, bunnies and the list grows.

Welcome to BYC ozarkhen...a sweet and good boy will watch out for the hens too....better choice than a meany.

Thank you for sharing your story about your brave beautiful boy!!! I can't have a roo cause they are noisy. I am not supposed to have chickens but I am willing to not have a roo so I can have my girls. I will have them some day.......

Glad Lancelot and I could help. A good rooster that is good to humans is worth more than their weight in gold. Good luck with your boy, I am sure he will be a wonderful flock guardian.
