A good roo will:

Find all tasty treats, call the girls wildly and feed them first before himself.

Watch for enemies and call danger warnings to the flock so they can escape.

Find safe and comfy places for the girls to lay, encourage them and then sing along with pride.

Watch over chicks and share meals with them. My roo will also snuggle with the chicks when mom decides she has had enough.

Keep the peace in the flock, settleing arguements between the girls and scolding young cockerels.

Dig dust holes and encourage bathing.

While they give no eggs, a good roo is worth his weight in eggs.

I second this!!!!

I think it is worth at least having 1 rooster for every 5-10 hens, but, of course, not necessary.
Personally, I think some of the roosters are the best looking -- but alas, they don't lay eggs so I don't need a coop full of them...
Right now, I have bearably enough, but I believe I'm about to reluctantly put 2 EE roosters up for sale.

I've only got 2 hens and i would like a rooster, they look veryy nice but they are to loud and i dont think my neighbours will like them, the neighbours moan when the hen lays her egg in the morning and craw abit

We have rehomed both of the roosters that we ended up with, but I especially wish I could have kept the second one. He was adorable, and so very sweet. (Zeus the black Silkie) We found homes for both of them because we live in the city, and while chickens are not illegal, it is strongly discouraged that anyone have a rooster due to noise.
Frankly, I would love to have a rooster around, and if we are ever able to buy a place out aways, with more property, we will have at least one. For all the reasons mentioned.

You dont need a roo at all. The hens can live happly without a roo. I just have my roo b/c he is beautiful, he gives me chicks if i want them, he is nice, and i love when he crows in the mron.

I've read a few posts on here about roosters sacrificing their lives for their hens.
I love Mister Hanky...

he's still young (4 1/2 months) so he has a lot to learn but he is very respectful of me, lets me pet him while he eats out of my hand, jumps up to get treats out of my hand and every time he sees a hawk he makes this BAWWWWWK sound and all the pullets go running into the chicken run.

Edited because my grammar is BAD!

I love my big RIR roo. He can be a bit testy, have to keep him in his place --- probably due to the fact that he was one of my first chicks that I hand raised the most. None of my "half wild" roos ever try to give me trouble. But each roo is different, RIRs are known for being a bit mean but mine is nothing that I can't handle. He has gone to bat for the hens against a raccon and lived to tell about it (because I came running out with my Maglight and scared the coon off) but like others said, they are LOUD if there is a predator and that helps us know when to come a runnin!!!

Roos are just pretty IMO, especially as they get older and get their big tails in.
Roos have a lot of personality and calling the girls and all that jazz is cute of them, fun to watch.

You can have a flock of layers without a roo perfectly fine, but many people just like having a roo or two around. Personal preference
