Why I haven't been around....So much for supporting our troops!

maybe you can find an lawyer that could do this probono since your son is in Iraq... just a thought... i wish that i could help you out

Well, we drove up there (100 miles) this afternoon so we could be at the meeting. Roger (who is on the commitee) told us last monday that we were on the agenda. Well, we got there and found out we were NOT on the agenda. So there goes another tank of gas wasted, not to mention the 4 hours travel time round trip!

They couldn't/wouldn't even tell us when we WILL be on the agenda. Could be 2 weeks or 2 months from now.

I am going to compose an email to my congressman about this. It is just wrong. I can not handle the stress this is putting me through, my health just can't take it. I'm also going to send the same email to all the KC area news papers and tv news stations, and perhaps even the radio station.

Who knows, perhaps a lawyer will hear about it and volunteer to help us.

Now we are being told that the shed has to be emptied! What is with that? The things IN that shed are my son's! What...he can't store HIS things in HIS shed on HIS propery?

Oh, and it was asked...what happens if they tear it down...well, they take the demo costs (somewhere between $20,000 and $50,000) and tack it on to the TAX BILL! Meaning I would have to pay for the demo IF I want to keep the empty lot!

Today I saw my husband get so upset and angry that he was shaking and he is the most CALM person I've ever met.

As for the house needing chickens...well, yes, I could put chickens up there but...I can't drive 200 miles round trip twice a day to let them out and put them back up for the night. So, the chickens are right here on the farm with me where they belong.

I haven't read every part of the thread but you need Congressional involvement,

Also a family advocate from the military to guide you through resources for your son

A national news station for this

There is also a military group that fixes up houses and helps folks ...even going so far as to build houses for disabled military

An attorney willing to work for free

A clear case of money starved city picking on the very ones they should be guarding. Sorry for the righteous indignation.

Call or write Ty Pennington on that national home repair program. They have the resources and "know" how to fix up but also to get some financial leverage on this one.

I'm praying so hard for you and your family and this situation. PM me for more help if needed.

You have to call Call for Action and channel 5- they have staff attorneys and will be ALL over this!!!

I'm livid, and it's not even me!!!

That just confirms you are dealing with a committee that has no idea what they are doing and that thinks they can do anything. Call the state bar and get a lawyers for free. There are many that would help you...I would do it myself if I was licensed in Kansas. I am almost positive that you will be able to sue them if they touch that house or the contents on the property.

The media would love this story. Someone else suggested adding your sons name to the deed. Thats a good idea. Whatever the outcome, thank your son for me for his service.

Fox News Network, not your local one but the cable channel one. They love stories like this. Hannity or Beck or maybe even O'rielly would like to do it.

(I just read more of this thread. I see where you can not add your sons name to the title because the property is involved in the demo process)

I sure hope you win. What city eggzactly is this??

How do they know something is IN the shed to begin with?

Someone is going onto YOUR property... and that is tresspassing.

I'm not understanding how they can direct that you cannot SELL YOUR property....

You NEED to contact a lawyer - MANY lawyers will take the case pro-bono - but you need to contact one as has been suggested. There is more to this than what you may realize.

Contact a Home Inspector immediately and front the money to have a complete home inspection done ASAP - its not going to cost more than what you're paying in gas money going to and from that house.

Contact the news media as has been suggested.

Send a certified registered letter written by you and hubby (but would be better coming from a lawer and wouldnt cost that much) demanding all documentation the city has that states this house is unfit and why its condemnd.

You cant do anything until you have at least why, in writing. Even the local news media will tell you that. You have to do some leg work here - just telling us what you think or your opininion on this house isnt going to justify anything - you need concrete evidence before you go to these meetings before the City Council, before you go to a lawyer, before you contact the news media. You can request it under the Freedom Of Information Act (look it up for the code and cite it in your letter to City Council) - they cannot deny you, its your right under that law. You have to have the utilities turned on - many cities will say a house is abandoned if the utilities are not at least on in some way - and that is a violation of city codes. Do the leg work and find out...

These things you must do before you can do anything else. There is more to this story........

I'm in Kansas and would love to raise a stink about this- are you in Junction?

Wait, I just saw that you're in Prescott- the house is in Emporia, then? Or where? I'm happy to call and help sound off on this to media- can you tell me any info on the location of the house and your name- then YOU don't have to be the one to have called.
