why is avocado bad for chickens?

Maybe it is because avocados drop parakeets dead in their tracks it is just safer to say no avocado? I have always heard avocado is good for dogs, who knew mine was supposed to have dropped dead from it, lol.

As far as grapes go, those are absolutely deadly. One woman who does rescue that I occasionally help out lost her dog to grapes not long ago. Apparently her husband kept a bowl of grapes out and it was so cute how the pup would help himself to them, until the day he died of grape related organ failure.

Onions maybe because "avoid strong smelling/tasting foods which may impart their flavor to the eggs"? Or maybe because "sulfer compounds=harsh so therefore onion=bad"?

A lot of these things are probably just animal fanatics trying to protect animals from things that aren't bad for them. Like that one mother everyone knows who wont let her kids near dogs because "omg germs dander and dirt" and the kid ends up with allergies and asthma and a weak immune system because he is never allowed to get dirty and be a kid. Coddling is as bad as not protecting, maybe worse. Just my humble opinion tho.

I've even seen people say chocolate is bad for rats, but it is totally safe and chocolate chips make great training rewards for them. Lol, oh and then there are the guinea pig fanatics who think breeding a guinea pig may as well be a death sentence for the mother because "OMG there are *always* complications. Either the mom or the babies WILL DIE. You are a monster how DARE you breed guinea pigs??! *foams at mouth*" and then they wonder why guinea pigs are inbred and unhealthy. Duh. The most common litters born are "accidental inbreeding litters", "pet store didn't separate/sex them properly" or "guinea pig mills" yeah, no duh dummies. YOU people caused this.

/rant over. Animal fanatics only end up hurting the animals in the long run imho.

Edit: oops, forgot I was reading an old thread! Hahahaha sorry for reviving a years old post

In recard to avocado, persin (a toxin) is the culprit. It is mostly in peel and pit. You can bake the pits and completely deactivate the toxin, and then they can eat the pit safely (highly nutritious). Discard the peel.
