Why is homegrown so weird?

Bettacreek - I am basically in the same boat as you. Our families think we're a bit odd, too. I mean when they were here last time I think they got grossed out because the run stunk a bit! (Puuulllleeeeeassse!)(I have already forgiven myself for that as I am building a 2nd coop as we speek) Do people realize the stench involved in factory farming? I live near a bunch of them and they stink when the windows are shut even!!! And guess where all the Easter hams came from! Not from a cute piggy running around in a green meadow! These factory farmed animals never see the light of day!!! I have really learned to tune people out any more. They contradict themselves by eating all that stuff. Like eating raw fish but being grossed out by someone eating a fresh clean raw egg.

We also take road killed deer and hunt. I'll tell you, I feel we are eating way healthier than most and I don't need to buy beef any more.
Good luck in dealing with the nay sayers! Just tune them out and tune us in!

I think it's a couple things. First, most people don't have a CLUE on how their food is raised and processed. If they did, all the "eeewws" and "yucks" would be for their storebought food.

Second, maybe especially regarding your mom, people seem to be cautious of ANYthing they haven't done yet. I have to admit, I would hesitate a moment before eating duck or duck eggs, for example, even though my chickens and their eggs are just fine and dandy, simply because it would be new to ME.

It is annoying, though, when the eews and yucks come from family when it would be so much more fun to have great conversations and support for your hobbies!

I think part of the problem is we have been "conditioned" to think anything to do with butchering is dirty. Plain and simple. We also have been scared to death by eating food in places we go, by people we don't know, and this probably puts you in the same category, which is ridiculous, but you know how people are. The internet is responsible too for a lot of stuff, mass hysteria can start from one mislabeled or wrongly told story . . .its a shame. If there is one thing the person who butchers for their own family is going to do, is be sanitary and clean and careful!!! Much more so than the local plants, even if they are inspected every butchering day. . .I hope you get your brother swung over, as he is halfway there!!! You would get down in half the time with a good helper!!!! Good luck!!!!

It is surprising that your mother has reacted in this way, mainly because of how she has grown up, but to be honest the drive of society for the past 30 years has been to become so sterile and removed from all of these things that it is generally not a surprise.

People here think the same. But their world is a fantasy, yours is reality, just remember that is some disaster happened your mother would soon remember all the things she has known from the past.

It is just a symptom of our plastic society I am afraid. She will chill out when she realises why you are doing this and be proud of your choices.

Funny thing about a lot of people these days is that they don't want to think about where there food comes from .

My homegrown eggs our much tastier than the storebought even if I have to clean them - usualy they are pretty clean unless one of the girls decides to sleep in thenest box .

I feel at least my hens arn't shoved into tiny little boxes

I was talking about the girls eating bugs and a girl here at work was doing the eeewww thing and said she wouldn't want to eat the eggs -
More for me !!!

I agree with you 100%. My mom's best friend is a total city slicker, it's disgusting. We processed 85 broilers in the school's processing plant a couple weeks ago and I was talking about it while she was around. She told me it was disgusting that we would do that, the food must be contaminated. We were decked out in smocks, aprons, boots, gloves and hairnets. I think we did a pretty swell job, IMO. Oh, and last week she called my mom while we were shopping at the new Farmer's Market. She was totally disgusted that my mom would buy fresh fruits and veggies from our local growers because they didnt come from the store. She drives me INSANE. And they have goats! They moved out next to a dairy and got goats just for the heck of it and were feeding them straight up grain until I clued them in. But I could rant for days about them, haha. My mom wont eat my eggs because she's seen my chickens, but when we were younger, she saw the cattle and pigs we slaughtered and ate them just fine. I think people pick and choose what grosses them out and other actions they do contradict their previous ideas, but again, that's JMO!

I have more! I took some eggs to my sister's the other day because her boyfriend loves my eggs. She broke some open to cook them and was like, "OMG Jordan! Come here, what is wrong with these eggs?!" and I looked and there was nothing wrong. So I asked what she was talking about and she was like, "They're dark orange, why!?" I wanted to smack her, she was raised the same way I was! But I explained to her that my birds have access to more greens and such, you know how it goes. Then I started the whole bug talk and grossed her out, but it made me laugh!

Even my ex, who is an avid traditional bow hunter, complains that my chickens don't have the freedom (despite the fact that they are free range) that the wild animals he kills have. What is with people? I'm on yahoo answers and there was a question about people being desensitived to violence and yet in my opinion, they are way more sensitive to killing animals. It's a very mixed up world.
